Mother’s Day

Mother's Day, written and performed by Susan Chase, sets out to be an homage not only to her mother but also to motherhood in general. All told through Susan's memories, which are presented as dreams and visions, she hopes to truly "see" her mother as the woman she was.

Beginning with her childhood, Chase explores her fondest understanding of her mother: her protectiveness, beautiful dresses, and stalwart presence. Chase embodies a child's physicality beautifully, slipping into the mannerisms and awkward, gangly limbs of a kid's body as they first learn to exist in this world. From climbing fire escapes to starting ballet, Chase perfectly personifies this phase of childhood, disappearing into her past. A standout moment of Chase's physicality is when she plays with fire as a child. She depicts the story of climbing the counter to get a hold of matches and discovers why adults have never let her be alone with them before. Sitting center stage, Chase pantomimes the experience, from her clunky striking of the match to her slowly reaching out to touch the flame. Her comedic timing and physical prowess bring the whole story to its inevitable and delightful conclusion.

The show is split into two acts. The first follows Chase's childhood memories as she becomes a mother herself; the second act is dedicated to her mother's final days. Mother's Day is a heartfelt piece where Chase expounds on what motherhood means to her; she views it as an act of godlike creation, divine and fulfilling, though something that cannot be appreciated until too late. Sentimental but never overly sappy, Chase's show is a resounding triumph in capturing one woman's truth and love for her mother.
