Light

In her NYC debut, Xue "Snow" Zheng was an instant standout through her mixture of traditional Chinese shadow puppetry and more straightforward solo theatre. Light is a captivating show that draws on multiple cultural influences to tell a universal story of a father and daughter. The story follows her through significant events in her life. The moments Zheng captures with her father are tender, often hilarious and very real.

Zheng is, of course, the star of the performance, effortlessly switching back and forth between herself and her father, Guangwei Zheng. Flanking her on either side of the stage were projection screens, one with subtitles for the performance and the other for the puppetry. On occasion, Zheng even enters the house to interact with the audience, whether that be to flirt with her father or to dance with a guy on her first date. She mixes different mediums, and by doing so, she fully welcomes the audience into the world of the story.

Zheng's love for her late father is at the heart of the piece. It is impossible to deny the emotion Zheng depicts. She shares her vulnerability with the audience in the last scene, speaking with tears in her eyes.

Light beautifully reflects a cultural melting pot and is a heartfelt production that Zheng can proudly share with international audiences, leaving a lasting impact on people from all backgrounds.
