I Get No Respect: Tales of a Failed Foreign Policy Pundit

Bill Hartung's I Get No Respect: My Life as a Failed Foreign Policy Pundit's encore performance on Sunday mixed charming audience interactions with humorous tales about his journey and life as a foreign policy pundit at the Quincy Institute.

Hartung leads a double life, one no one could ever expect. But it is because of that double life that he is able to share jokes about his time on Fox News and CNN right along with youthful drunken escapades. Hartung's humor is often self-deprecating but never in a way that feels downtrodden; it is as if he is winking at the audience in his delivery, never taking himself too seriously. His quasi "aw shucks" persona also helps make his snarkier jokes land with more of a comedic bite to them. It was also great to see how much of his set is written versus improvised between the two performances. A particular William Henry Harrison joke on Friday night, which made me laugh out loud, didn't make its appearance on Sunday but was instead replaced with clever jokes referencing the performances of a fellow stand-up comic in the audience. He ends his set with a Q&A, allowing the audience to ask questions about his double life and allowing for some thoughtful and hilarious responses from Hartung.

Hartung is dry, witty, and overall a joy to watch onstage. He is not what you expect from a foreign policy pundit or a stand-up comic. Instead, he becomes his own new thing, something unequivocally Bill.
