Ken Harris', Foes of a Minimum Wage Guard follows Steve Smelly an elderly retail guard who suffers under his "oppressive job title" and an equally tyrannical boss. This semi-autobiographical piece explores the idea that life can still teach you new lessons no matter how old you are.
Harris starts his show by welcoming the audience to New Hire Orientation before launching into a wild tale of friendship, betrayal, and the importance of honesty. Harris keeps the stage simple with just a chair, which works well since his skill at character voices heightens the performance immensely. The variety of characters he embodies, from the grumpy down-on-his-luck Gus to the big boss Mr Coldstone, provide the audience a treat as they watch Harris show off all the different voices he can throw into the production. Despite the pacing suffering at times, Harris clearly feels a deep connection to his material. He radiates enjoyment in his work that can be felt in the audience.
Foes of a Minimum Wage Guard marks a NYC premiere for Harris. Watching a performer throw themselves into something new and occasionally daunting is exciting. Harris will be returning in the fall for the next United Solo season.
