Juan Pablo Mendive's F.O.M.O, starring Jonas Kobberdal, sets out to entertain and educate the audience on the ever-changing world of Bitcoin.
The show follows Enoch, a down-on-his-luck barista who turns crypto-guru after he has an awakening of sorts to what his life could be. From making coffee to becoming a billionaire to losing it all before ending on top again, Mendive's show is as unpredictable as the crypto market.
I remember how, in 2021, Dogecoin suddenly seemed to be everywhere, with people rallying for it to "go to the moon" and reach $1 — a milestone it ultimately never hit. It was so bizarre for someone like me, who has no interest or knowledge of Bitcoin, to watch this craze break out of nowhere. Suddenly, so many people I knew were buying "Dogecoin" in hopes of getting rich quickly, an idea that is found at the heart of Mendive's play.
F.O.M.O stands for "fear of missing out," which sums up the whole conceit of bitcoin trading. It's the idea that you don't want to miss the chance to make millions, so you scramble after this "fake" money, hoping it will someday become real. Enoch represents many Americans who are overworked and underpaid, clinging to the hope of a magical moment that will make them billionaires — a moment that, for most, will never come.
Mendive's writing is contemporary, referencing Reddit, 4chan, and even parodying crypto-influencers on YouTube. Kobberdal delivers an off-the-wall performance that takes the audience on a wild ride, one that they won't forget.
