Backwards, Forwards, Back, written by Jacqueline Goldfinger, directed by Sue Wolf, with a captivatingly performed by Lawrence James, is a gripping solo show that dives into the emotional toll of war and the struggle to heal.
The stage is simple — one stool, center stage. On top of the stool rests a pair of virtual reality goggles. It's minimal, yet the moment James steps on stage, the space feels full. His presence, physicality, and effortless use of the stage immediately draw the audience in. He doesn't perform at you — he invites you into his world with a conversational ease that makes every word feel personal and real.
James plays a soldier who recently returned from Afghanistan, haunted by the ghosts of his tour. As he wrestles with seeking help, he undergoes virtual reality therapy. This treatment immerses him back into the memories he's desperate to escape. The play doesn't offer easy answers or a miracle cure; instead, it presents an honest look at the complexities of PTSD and the difficult path to reintegration.
This story hit close to home for me, having a family member who served in the military. While his experience is different, I've seen how service leaves a lasting impact. Backwards Forward Back captures that reality with honesty and depth.
James never forces the moment. His pacing, physicality, and ability to let emotions simmer beneath the surface create a deeply felt and achingly authentic portrayal.
With a sold-out New York premiere, James earned two encore performances for the United Solo Festival. The next performance is on Wednesday April 2nd at 2:00 PM.
